As a retired clinical psychologist I am interested in discovering new ways to improve self-understanding. This is it! Learning about our authentic self is a valuable journey to take regardless of our age, and this book provides the avenues to accomplish that. The author's use of "life as theater" with its many varied scripts as a metaphor for how we became who we are, is impressive and offers an opportunity to review our being. The author addresses the many stages of life from early childhood to senior years while examining the many script writers to which we are exposed. This highly enjoyable read provides a great framework to have an unemotional discussion about an emotional subject with friends and family that may be directing you in their plays.
An unusual approach to understanding the people you meet in life's journey. The book challenges
your everyday reactions to those around you and your interpretation of their actions. Very entertaining!
This is a super read for those who have the courage to look into themselves and how they relate to their family and other relationships. The use of the play metaphor makes for an interesting concept for psychological issues. This is not necessarily a self help book but more of a
look at how you can project yourself to others and more importantly to yourself. Because of the authors extensive knowledge of philosophers and his references to them it is not for the average reader. Extremely informative as the reader looks inward and strives to have an authentic life.
Really enjoyed this book. It covers so much in such a fluid way. Really makes one think about life in the big picture.
I love the way L.L. Lydic is able to touch upon all walks of life in this modern age and give
true insight and perspective. From past to present, you can't help getting cought up in this unique story It's one of those rare books that you can't put down.

What a wonderfully fresh approach to self-analysis! A thoughtful yet practical method for understanding the dynamics of the relationships in your life, and improving them. Some very insightful and thought-provoking perspectives on why we are the way we are with all the different people in our lives. And good techniques for possibly changing - or eliminating - some of the most troublesome relationships. I really enjoyed the exercise of examining my professional and personal interactions in the context of the scripts that have been written for them. And rewriting the ones which don't work.
This is a self help book like none other. It explores different chapters of life using theater as a metaphor. It is a great way to make yourself the spectator of your own actions, perhaps making it easier to see the choices we make more clearly. It's a very effective vehicle to self introspection, rather than just having someone dictating on how to be a better person. It is not only written from great wisdom; but it will also have you laughing out loud. Who doesn't need a little self improvement while being entertained and uplifted? It is also easy reading, I like being able to skip around to the different subjects- marriage, children, divorce, etc.. Without having to commit to a long heavy read each time. I highly recommend this book, you will not find anything else like it out there!
It is about a path to self realization and self awareness and so much more. It showed me so many things that I sensed but never fully understood. It opened my eyes to events and people and relationships in ways I never thought of before. I see my daily life, my history, as a series of big and small plays that I unknowingly performed in.
I am now able to sense which ones are valid for me and ones that have deceived me. I believe that I will approach the coming years with a clearer eye, a self preserving eye because of this book. I will be my own true self in my work and my relationships....more confident and happier. In addition, though this is a very intelligent book, it often made me laugh out loud.
